Cushions come in many different shapes, sizes, colours and styles. You can immediately make your home more inviting, cosy, and comfortable by placing a collection of cushions on your sofa, bed or chair. Buying new cushions is a way to change the look and style of your home instantly, easily and affordably.

Styles that are currently popular in 2013 include Hamptons, Scandinavian, mid-century modern, industrial, vintage and shabby chic. Soft, tactile, natural materials are big, along with handmade pieces that encompass traditional skills such as embroidery and knitting. Ethnic and cultural designs from countries such as Mexico, Africa, and the Central Asia are also on-trend.

Colours are an important aspect of interior trends. Dulux has colour experts who study trends around the world, and have come up with six current colour palettes. Their forecast considers the digital movement, social change, power, and the way people move globally.  “Merge” has earthy, warm colours, while “Blur” is daring and bold. “Seek” re-works vintage colours, while “Share” has stone, grey and monochromatic influences. “Empower” uses confidant greens and blues while “Blur” is daring and bold.

Last year, neon and fluorescent colours were big, but this spring sees colours going more pastel, with softer shades mixed in with brighter hues. Yellow was big in 2013 and will continue through to 2014, partly due to the variety of shades and versatility. It lends well to contemporary design and natural materials which are also emerging.  Blues are increasingly popular, including indigo, aqua, teal and turquoise. I noticed that blue played a big role in colours used on The Block Sky High this year and Pantone’s 2014 colour of the year is Dazzling Blue.

When it comes to updating your interior to incorporate latest trends, a great place to start is with cushions. In regards to colour, it works well if you choose one or two colours from a piece nearby, such as a rug, painting or wall colour. Though do contrast the cushion colours with the colour of the sofa, chair or bed as you don’t want it to blend in and get lost.

My online Australian store Yellow Front Door offers a large range of indoor cushions in a variety of colours and styles. You can mix and match stripes, patterns, geometrics and floral designs.

Hand sketches are a current trend, as seen in our range from Sian Elin – Tress, Peacocks and Inlay White and Blue cushions. These are hand-drawn designs inspired by travels, different cultures and traditional motifs. Imperial Gate and Lotus Root draw on classic Chinese architecture. Also incorporating overseas symbols and cultures are the ikat and suzani designs, as seen in Waverly Desert Flower and Dwellstudio Batavia Ikat cushions.
