When it comes to home life and home design, the outdoors is becoming increasingly important, with the blurring of boundaries between the indoors and out. This is seen with the current trend for outdoor rooms, outdoor kitchens, decks and pergolas. Gardens and pools are still an important part of Australian life too, given the long hot and intense summers.
Decorating outdoor areas such as the garden, balcony, terrace or poolside is almost as important as decorating the indoors. A key way to decorate and introduce a style, theme or colour is with outdoor cushions. These days, outdoor cushions are made of thick, strong polyester or acrylic fabric, which are resistant to mould, mildew, water, fading and stains. This keeps them looking good for longer. Outdoor cushion inserts need to be weather-resistant too, such as the range of inserts made from 100% PET fibre, which is derived from recycled plastic water bottles. This makes them an eco-friendly option too as over 70 water bottles are saved from landfill for every kilo of fibre used.
There are some current trends in outdoor cushions for 2013. There’s been increasing interest in tribal designs that are inspired by overseas cultures, symbols and traditions. Suzani mean “needle” in Persian and is a traditional embroidery technique used in textile-making, originally from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan. Suzani designs use motifs including animals such as birds and fish, leaves, vines, pomegranates, flowers, the sun and moon, and circle shapes are used.
Ikat designs are also popular for outdoor cushions, with the word “ikat” deriving from the Indonesian word “mengikat” which means to tie. Bindings are applied to fabric threads in a pattern, and the threads are then dyed, forming the pattern. This produces an unusual blurred look to the lines and edges of the design.
Stripes will always be popular in interior design, and are used in outdoor cushions that complement classic, traditional, Hamptons and contemporary styles. Geometrics are also on-trend for contemporary outdoor cushions in 2014, with designs incorporating triangles, squares, diamond and circle shapes.
